Blue Collar Smarts, Celtic Roots, Metal and a Spark
Sullivan’s high craft & originality jump off the wall
San Geronimo – From striking ancient runes to Madonna references, viewers are drawn in by the textures and colors of Sean Sullivan’s dynamic metal-based works. Featuring stone, copper, sheet metal, jade among his materials, the self-dubbed “guy who makes things” has worked blue collar jobs most of his life as a welder, machinist, plumber and sprinkler fitter. “When I first started to try to create something artistic, it had to have function: gates, sink holders, light fixtures, etc. With a specific function in mind, I was free to explore my creative side,” he says reflecting on his current show of art sculptures, “After a while, I was able to make things purely aesthetic.”
His heritage has been a rich source of inspiration.
“I became fascinated with ancient symbols, their form, meaning and origins. I am of Celtic and Germanic ancestry, and found myself being drawn to The Runes, Viking symbols and mythology, spiritual symbols, along with other symbols from different parts of the world, and time periods. I am fascinated by how these symbols came to be, and why they mean what they do.”
Sullivan has shown his work at the Dance Palace and past shows at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center. He lives in Woodacre.
